Background noise on calls
Hello everyone,

I did another InnovaPhone installation earlier this week and the customer just gave me a call, to tell me that the sound quality is too good, when you look at it from the positive side. If you look at it from a negative perspective, noise cancelling doesn't work well.

If they have someone 10 meters away from the phone talking, the caller can hear that... also when people are walking around or the printer is printing you can easily hear all of that.

I searched the wiki for noise or background noise cancelling but I can't find anything on this subject. All devices (PBX/Phones) use the 12r2 sr10 firmware.

If anyone has any idea that would be more than welcome.

Re: Background noise on calls
Hi Caspar,

I guess that you use a HD-codec like G722 or Opus. You can see this at the connection monitor during the connection. If you set every call to G711 this effect will be not so strong. Of course, this is not the idea behind a modern PBX-system but sometimes the users need the old ISDN-Quality. My wife hates HD, she says thats sounds bad. But no - it sounds to good and she don't expect this quality. And I think Innovaphone uses microphones at there devices that have also a higher quality then others to use the full quality of HD-codecs.
There is no noise cancelling. For this you need at least 2 microphones. One takes the main-sound from user and one takes the background noises and the DSP will filter the background-sound from the main-signl. For this you must use headsets wit noise cancelling. My Jabra Motion UC makes a good job in this.

Re: Background noise on calls
Good afternoon Niels,

Once more thank you for taking your time to reply. Unfortunately the SIP gateway is already set to G711A. So all I can do is offer them a Jabra headset, my employer said I should offer Jabra Pro 930, so that's what I did.

Funny thing is, I already warned them about the "higher quality" which may be percieved as "lower quality" because all ISDN leaves is the tones for voice, and now you can hear a much broader spectrum of sound waves... funny you've encountered the same!
