Common LDAP-Clients request to search only a list of the results to reduce the volume of data. Only if the user selects an entry will the details of this particular entry be requested from the LDAP server. And ContactsApp did not allow this, so most 3rd-party products can't use ContactsApp. This is not helpful in offering the same data to all clients.
